⚡️EXCLUSIVE: Sexual harassment on public transportation is all too common in India. In one such incident of attempted sexual abuse in Assam’s Nagaon, a girl stiffly confronted the alleged accused, who tried his inappropriate advances while she was travelling with him in an autorickshaw.
The incident was brought to light when the alleged victim, a student at Nowgong College (Autonomous), took to Instagram, giving a detailed description of her experience.
While speaking with ‘truth.,’ she revealed that a similar incident occurred with the same man a few years ago while travelling on a public commute when she was about eight to nine years old.
She claimed, referring to the incident a few years back with the same accuser, “He tried to molest me by touching my private parts, and at that time too, I yelled at him, but he stopped the tempo and ran away.”
She elaborated by pointing out that in the latest incident with the accused, even after scolding and warning him initially, he did not stop and continued his offensive sexual advances, soon after which she was compelled to yell out publicly.
“He was dragged out by the tempo driver. There was a lack of support from other passengers, as they didn’t do anything. He even tried to molest other passengers too,” she added.
“No police complaint was filed due to a lack of proper evidence,” she said.
Several other girls also came forward to share similar bad experiences with the same accuser after the girl posted the video on social media.
Sexual harassment in public places is merely perceived as a “regular” mishap in a country where rape cases get attention only when a certain level of brutality against the victim triggers the public mind. Thus, physically inappropriate advances are not even recognised as suitable enough to be called out. Perhaps that is why every female is a victim of this.
How are we supposed to only condemn brutal crimes against women after they occurred, if all we do is keep our mouths shut when it’s time to call out offenders?
